Collective Identity

India is a country of immense geographic, cultural and economic diversity. Colors, dress, lifestyles, language and architecture vary with a heaven and earth difference. Coupled with cutting edge research centers and an over inflated bureaucracy, life can be as exciting as it can be trying. Unadorned and dignified as India marches towards progress and development, she is taking 3000 years of history and a billion people along on her journey.

Growing up in India, I sensed a Collective Identity, something that held the parts together with inseparable strength. Implicit in my understanding of this identity was the acceptance of India's diversity. Implicit in my acceptance of that diversity was to understand what drove it - the people of India.

Since 1996 I have searched for that heartbeat through my photographs. These images are a glimpse into the life of India.
