Mermaid Parade

The Coney Island Mermaid Parade is an annual ocean themed event to celebrate the start of summer season. With its beginnings in 1983 the parade pays homage to the Coney Island Mardi Gras parades of the early 20th century. Held against the backdrop of Coney Island’s amusement park and beaches the event attracts hundreds of participants dressed in extraordinary costumes of sea creatures and mermaids and thousands of spectators to cheer them on.
